There are about a million different ways to organize coupons. Everyone is different therefore everyone has a different system that will work better for them. I’m going to show you how I clip and organize my coupons and then I’m going to highlight a few other resources so that you can find the method that best fits your and your lifestyle!
When it comes to cutting and clipping coupons I use a very simple method – if I am sure that I’ll use that coupon, I cut it. If I am unsure, I don’t cut it. Why spend hours of my time each month cutting and clipping coupons that I am not going to use? Same principle applies to printable coupons as well – why print them if you are not going to use them? It’s a waste of your ink and time. Use your time wisely and clip only the coupons that you’ll know you are going to use {or think you might use}.
When I first started organizing my stash of coupons, I used the envelope system. Each envelope was categorized by items {food, personal care, cleaning products, medicine, etc} and, after clipping my coupons, I would place them in the correct envelope.
I soon outgrew this method and started coming up with thrifty ideas to better organize my coupons. I knew of many different methods – such as the baseball card holder, coupon binders, envelopes in a box, and more – but I wanted my coupon organizer to be small enough to fit into my purse without constantly causing me a hassle.
So, I dropped in on my local Dollar Tree and picked up this baby for a whopping 1oo cents. It’s a 5 x 7 photo album that I probably would never really use for family pictures. It won’t carry more than a 100-150 coupons, but I don’t usually have than many at one time anyway!
My main desire was to have a safe place to put my coupons, so that they wouldn’t get wet or tear in my purse, but something that wasn’t hideously ugly and would fit nicely in my purse. I feel like I achieved my goal with this photo album turned coupon holder.
At the front of my coupon holder is a list of current Redbox freebie rental codes. I update the list as I receive codes. After that comes food, personal products, medicine, and misc. I try to keep it organized by items, but, I’ll be honest, I don’t always have time to rearrange if there isn’t room. I have a really good memory when it comes to coupons and saving money, so if I have a coupon for an item I see on sale or I need, I know I have one and usually about right where it is.
If the coupons are too tall/long I simply turn them sideways to fit. If they still hang out of the top, I fold them {not on the bar code!} to where I can still see what the coupon is for, the amount of the coupon, and the expiration date.
I keep all of my Walgreens coupons, coupon booklets, and Register Rewards towards the back of my coupon holder. This has worked out great for me since I know right where they always are and I’m not afraid of losing my RR’s!
Typically, what I will do when preparing for a shopping trip is: Plan – write down my shopping list and match up the coupons that I am planning to use. This saves me time in the store not having to flip back and forth between the pages in my coupon holder. I usually just place the coupons at the front of my holder where I can easily access them. I will use some sort of divider {such as a folded piece of paper or a coupon I know I am not using} to bring the coupons for the items in my buggy up to the front so I know I have the correct coupons out for each correct item. If my hubby is with me, I usually just hand them to him. He does a great job keeping up with them…and me!
All in all, this is the system that works best for me. In the future it may not, but it does now and I’m happy with it. The photo album turned coupon holder cost me a dollar and has helped me stay better organized to save over hundreds of dollars. Not a bad return on my investment.
