Homemade Pizza

Every Friday night, my hubby and I enjoy homemade pizza for dinner while we watch a movie together.  It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite traditions as we sit to watch a movie together and let the stress of the past week wash away in light of the coming weekend.    We tried several recipes for pizza dough before settling on the one I found here.

I really like this recipe because it is easy to make, it freezes well, and, of course, it’s yummy!  ;)     I usually follow the recipe to the letter, but ever now and then we’ll change it up a bit.

Homemade Pizza

7 ½ cups all-purpose flour (approximately)
1 pk dry active yeast
2 1/2 cups water, warm (90-115ºF)
1/2 Tbsp +1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
All-purpose flour as needed
  • Pour the warm water into a bowl – make sure that it is warm, but not too hot.  If it is too hot it can ‘kill’ the yeast.     Add yeast to water and whisk to dissolve completely.   Let rest for about 5 minute or until yeast activates.
  • Add 1 cup of flour, salt and olive oil.  Mix well.     Add remaining flour 1 cup at a time until dough is soft and springy -  I allow mine to stir until the sides of the  bowl comes clean.   If you add too much flour, add a small amount of water until it reaches the right texture.   If the dough is too wet, add small amounts of flour.
  • I always take the dough and place it in a greased bowl – turning to coat all sides of dough with oil.   Allow to rise 2-3 hours or until doubled in size.   Once doubled in size, cut dough into 4 equal pieces.   {Note: if you are freezing the dough, this is where I stick it in a freezer bag and place it in the freezer so that it doesn’t have time to rise a second time} Roll into balls and allow to rise 2 hours or until doubled in size.
  • When using frozen dough, remove from freezer 4-6 hours before using.  Allow to rise.   We usually just leave it in the freezer bag to thaw and rise since we are just going to punch it back down and flatten it out anyway.
Roll dough out onto your preferred baking pan {we use a pizza stone}

Poke dough with fork repeatedly to prevent air bubbles.   Bake dough @ 350 for 5 minutes.
Select and prepare toppings while dough is baking.    We love pepperoni, minced garlic, and lots of onion and cheese!
Once dough has baked for 5 minute, remove from oven.  Spread sauce over dough, and then add your toppings.
Don’t be afraid to be generous with your toppings.  The more, the better!
Place pizza back into the oven at 350 for 15-20 minutes or until the crust reaches your desire crunchiness.  ;)
and voila!  one delicious homemade pizza.
